In celebration of Plastic Free July, Beyond Plastics is rolling out a robust slate of resources and activities to help all of us take concrete steps toward a plastic-free future. With Beyond Plastics’ help, individuals can participate in 31 days of simple, effective actions — one for every day of the month — to reduce reliance on plastic.

“This is not your average awareness campaign. We created this calendar to give people something they can actually do every day — whether it's making a personal swap away from plastic or contacting decision-makers to push for systemic change,” said Judith Enck, Beyond Plastics president and former EPA regional administrator. “The plastic pollution problem is a crisis created by companies and will require companies and policy-makers to reverse it, but everyday choices still matter, and individuals who feel compelled to do their part should know how to get involved. Our Plastic Free July actions are designed to empower people to push for both personal and political change — and have some fun while doing it.”

Started in 2011 as a key initiative of the Australia-based Plastic Free Foundation, Plastic Free July is a month-long opportunity to spread awareness of the excessive amount of plastic being produced and used in everyday life, and join the movement to curb the problem.

The Beyond Plastics Plastic Free July Calendar includes a mix of actions that are:

  • Personal — like swapping out plastic produce bags or switching to a stainless steel metal water bottle;

  • Educational — such as reading up on “chemical recycling” or sharing myth-busting resources about “biodegradable” and “compostable” plastic; and

  • Legislative — including calls to contact elected officials or advocate for local bans on plastic foam.

Every day’s action is designed to be simple and accessible, making it easy for individuals, classrooms, and community groups to participate. Participants are encouraged to:

  • Print or bookmark the calendar and follow along each day;

  • Share their progress on social media using #PlasticFreeJuly and tagging Beyond Plastics at: Bluesky | X | Instagram | Facebook | LinkedIn | Threads | TikTok | YouTube

  • Invite friends, family, and/or colleagues to take on the challenge together.
