EPA Issues a High Priority Designation for Vinyl Chloride
December 18, 2024
Following a year-long prioritization process that began in December 2023, today, the U.S. EPA announced that it will formally designate five known or probable carcinogens as High-Priority Substances: vinyl chloride, acetaldehyde, acrylonitrile, benzenamine, and 4,4’-methylene bis(2-chloroaniline) (MBOCA). These chemicals will now undergo a rigorous risk evaluation under the nation’s chemical safety law, the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).
“These risk evaluations will be used to determine how to protect people from harmful chemical exposures,” said Assistant Administrator for the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention Michal Freedhoff.
We are very grateful to our allies and to the 10,000+ people who submitted public comments during the last year to encourage the EPA to issue this high-priority designation and begin the process of evaluating vinyl chloride’s risks. Onward!
